The Who’s and What’s of a Wedding Reception WRPS – 6

The Who’s and What’s of a Wedding Reception

Hello my name is Jack Barros, professional wedding DJ and author of Modern Wedding Ceremony 101. An eBook on American wedding ceremonies available to you on my website

Welcome to this edition of the Wedding Reception Planning Series, a set of articles designed to provide you the information you need to plan the wedding reception of your dreams.

This edition; ‘Who Does What at My Wedding Reception?’

Most of the roles in weddings are easy to figure out and determine who will perform the various ceremonies and rituals associated with American wedding receptions.

There are a couple of parts of the wedding reception where modern influences have added to the options we have to choose from.

The 2 areas we will discuss are the wedding Blessing and the Wedding Toast.

The blessing is often done by whomever performed the wedding ceremony. Traditionally the ceremony would have been done by a priest, pastor or a government official. The majority of weddings are still done in this manner.

In my home state of Massachusetts, residents are now able to get licensed for the day to perform the wedding ceremony in place of clergy or public officials. Now you may have a good friend or relative perform the wedding ceremony for you.

The wedding blessing, is typically done immediately following the introductions.  Anyone can perform the blessing at your wedding reception. In the case where the wedding ceremony official will not be attending the wedding reception, then there are other options. I usually suggest a religious family member or someone close to you that would be honored to perform the blessing for you.

In many instances, I have been asked to perform the blessing for my couples. In these cases, I use a blessing that is generic enough not to offend any of your guests and is done in a way as no one feels forced into partaking of the ritual.

A sample blessing: Ladies and Gentlemen, In the absence of clergy I have been asked to say the blessing today. For those of you that would like to join us, please bow your head. Lord thank you for blessing these two in marriage. It is the greatest way we know to show our love for one another. We ask that you bless this marriage and the food we are about to eat, and all the festivities we are about to partake in, we ask this in your name. Amen

Another area of a wedding reception that sometimes needs clarification is the wedding toast. Traditionally the host would welcome the guests and then the best man would propose a toast to the newlyweds.

Nowadays the emcee will welcome your guests and introduce the best man. What there has been is a trend in recent years where more and more members of the bridal party are also proposing toasts to the newlyweds.

What happens in a wedding toast is that all the guest will be asked to stand for the toast. The newlyweds, as guests of honor will remain seated.  The best man will be introduced. He would then introduce anyone else that would be speaking.

There is not a right or a wrong way. If a member of your bridal party is comfortable with speaking in public, then they may do so. You know your friends and should act accordingly. We’ve all seen wedding toast fails on YouTube!

One last tip for brides or grooms that would like to thank their guests for coming and are comfortable with public speaking then right after the toast is the best time,

How to Choose a Wedding Introduction Style WRPS – 4

Hello my name is Jack Barros, professional wedding DJ and author of Modern Wedding Ceremony 101. An eBook on American wedding ceremonies available to you on my website.

welcome to the next edition in the Wedding Reception Planning series. How to Choose a Wedding Introduction Style.

In previous articles we discussed that there are a lot of traditions that you can have in your wedding reception but you don’t have to have any of them some of them or make up your own. One tradition that endures is the introduction into the wedding reception.

In this article we will discuss how to choose a wedding introduction style. Will you choose a relaxed casual introduction for the first time as newlyweds or will you have a loud and rowdy, party type introduction to the world.

First, how formal is your wedding reception going to be? Your wedding reception introduction helps to set the stage for what kind of a reception party you are going to have.

While you may not enjoy the spotlight on you, this is your introduction into the formal reception, I suggest making your intro interesting or memorable in some way. Let your guests know that after dinner they are in for a great time. In many parts of the country, such as in the Boston, MA area, nothing really happens until after dinner.

Have you ever been to a wedding that dragged on and on and just never seemed to end? You look at your date and start looking for the closest exit. I am sure you do not want that type of wedding reception.

The reason this happens is that while the bride and groom have had an extremely busy day, your guests have been waiting for you to join them. Many of them attended the ceremony and went immediately to the reception venue. Prior to the reception starting it is typical for the wedding party and close family members to gather for formal pictures.

During this time, we typically provide our guests with appetizers and background music. From the start of the ceremony to the start of the introductions could be 1 to 3 hours. There is not a lot of activity that keeps your guests entertained. Your introduction can add energy and excitement into your reception that will carry through dinner.

The easiest way to show your wedding introduction style is with the music you choose. There are many different types of music and music tempos to choose from. For low key wedding receptions, you may choose love songs for your introduction. Want your guests to get into a dance mood? I recommend something upbeat and fun.

Now that you have an idea of your introduction style, it is time to pick the music that will aid in setting just the right tone for your reception.  What we will talk about is how many songs should you use in your wedding reception introduction?

You can have as many songs as there are people in your wedding party! While that used to be difficult for your wedding entertainers to accomplish, it is now much easier for your professional wedding DJ to provide.

One factor to consider when choosing songs, is how long will it take the person being introduced to walk in the room? Is there enough time for the relevant section of the song to play?

Often brides and grooms will choose songs for the various parts of the bridal party. For the parents you will choose a song from your parents’ generation, while choosing music from your own generation for your bridal party.

Another choice is playing one song for the parents and formal bridal party, and one song for the bride and groom. With the simplest choice being to have one song used for all of the introductions.

Music gives you the ability to have the wedding introduction you have always dreamed about.

What style will you choose for your wedding introduction? Leave a comment below with your style or wedding introduction song?

You have been introduced into your wedding reception, now what? Find out in the next article in the Wedding Reception Planning series, What to Do After the Wedding Introduction.

Jazz Wedding Prelude Songs

Jazz Wedding Prelude Songs

The Wedding Ceremony Prelude marks the guest’s arrival to the wedding location. It typically starts around half an hour to an hour before the start of the wedding ceremony itself.

The length of the prelude is determined by the number of guests so it’s best that you’re prepared well. The wedding starts when all the important guests have arrived.

The prelude is also the best time to set the mood for the entire event, while the guests wait for the formal ceremonies of the wedding to commence. Modern wedding coordinators tend to set a cheerful atmosphere during this period, but some people prefer a subdued tone which then creates an intimate, and more solemn mood for the wedding itself. Classical music brings with it a sense of grandness, but at the same time, it also lends a sense of sacredness– telling us that an important ceremony is happening.

One of the more popular music genres to play during the prelude is jazz. It sets a light mood without being overpowering. When you play subtly upbeat music, guests tend to relax, laugh, and smile more.

The songs and its singers also add to the mood. When people hear familiar voices and tunes, they tend to sing along and this makes the waiting time less tedious

Michael Buble’s rendition of Crazy Little Called Love is clear proof that this crooner can cover any song and make it truly his own. This song has been covered by many other greats, such as Elvis Presley and Queen, but Michael’s unique and soothing voice has managed to make it new again. The lyrics of the song talks about the ups and downs of love, quite perfect for a wedding.

Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup by Nat King Cole is another jazz favorite during wedding preludes. Who wouldn’t love Nat King Cole’s voice? The song may contain French words but it plainly tells about a man pledging his love to her woman through the words ‘I love you, yes I do.’

Kenny G is one of those artists who has managed to show the world that lyrics is not really a requirement for music to be fully enjoyed. With the power of his clarinet, he wooed people around the globe and gained worldwide recognition. One of his most recognizable piece of work and most heard during weddings is Forever in Love. This piece is light and can set the mood just right during the prelude.

Another jazz master, Louis Armstrong, left us with so many great songs. Honeysuckle Rose is a song about how sweet love can be. It’s a less formal approach by comparing kisses to honey and the words work well together.

Michael Buble gets another number in this playlist with his version of the classic How Sweet It Is. This song is another staple during weddings and one that it sure to get the guests singing along because of the light, familiar lyrics.

If you want to inject some jazz music into your prelude song playlist, you can’t go wrong with these five pieces.

I knew I loved you then
But you’d never know
‘Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
I know I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you until we’re grey and old
Just say you won’t let go
Just say you won’t let go

Say You Won’t Let Go James Arthur

And I will walk with you
Using the stars as guides
On a homeward path we go (path we go)
Knowing our time is nigh
I ? and I will walk
To be with you
All I’ve done (and all I say, I)
To be with you (to be with you, to be with you)

Walk with You Dispatch

When you need a song and you would rather not hear singing, try;

Love Thing Joe Satriani

Flow sweetly hang heavy
You suddenly complete me
You suddenly complete me
Flow sweetly hang heavy
You suddenly complete me
You suddenly complete me

Oh oh hey
Oh oh hey
Hysteric
Oh oh hey
Oh oh hey
Hysterical

Hysteric Yeah Yeah Yeahs
